Our 5th grade reading group read an old tale by Hans Christian Andersen titled “The Pine Tree.” Students spent a over a week engaged in some in depth reading of the selection focusing on the evolving theme of story, character analysis, vocabulary, and story structure. The culminating activity was to create a video using iMovie on the iPads which represented the story that included free-use photos, story captions, and free-use music. Most of the projects are complete and posted. There are a few in the latter stages that will be posted when they are complete. Please take a few moments to view their work.
Our 4th and 5th graders have worked very hard the last few weeks researching sea explorers in depth and transforming their learning into some wonderful videos. Students learned and used the iMovie iPad app for their video projects, and for background music, they used freeplaymusic, which provides free audio for educational use.
Our 4th grade and 5th grade reading groups learned about the Constitution of the United States last week. Each group participated in a choral reading activity about the Constitution, and they did a “Close Read” of a Weekly Reader article, which involves reading a specific passage and analyzing it in great detail. After the reading activities, student-paired groups created Haiku Deck slideshows demonstrating their understanding of the 1st Amendment.
Our iPad pilot is coming along well with both students and teachers learning something new all the time. In our 4th grade math class we have been studying area and perimeter models and problems. We are using the Geoboard app by the Math Learning Center. The pictures above show students using the Geoboard app. We have also begun using an app titled Splash Math. This app provides skill reinforcement for all areas we study in 4th grade math with many practice modules and some on screen worksheets. Student results on the practice modules and worksheets is emailed to the teacher.
The new iPad carts have arrived! Last spring EY teachers from the 2/3 and 4/5 teams wrote a proposal for a district pilot project focusing and student assessment, intervention, and reinforcement in the area of math. The proposal was approved for two ipad carts (30 devices in each). Currently we are in the process of formatting the devices and carts. Today in 4/5 math we used the iPads and an online service called Poll Everywhere to conduct a student survey to be used in a graphing unit this week. Below are some pics of the first rollout of the devices.
