Your child will soon be taking our state’s standardized tests. By working together, we can make your child’s test experience both positive and
successful. Here are some ways to help your child succeed:
Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest
Have your child eat a healthy breakfast at home or in the cafeteria
Make sure your child arrives at school on time (before 8:25 am).
Make sure your child has a working set of headphones at school
NO CELL PHONES & SMART WATCHES – If a student has a cell
phone or a smart watch, it creates a “testing impropriety” that
must be reported and will likely invalidate their test. Please leave
these devices at home.
STATE TESTING SCHEDULE
LANGUAGE ARTS: MAY 6 – 10
MATH: MAY 13 – 17
SCIENCE: MAY 22
Thank you for your help!
Our fifth graders have been reading portions of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” this year. This unit begins with a review of Shakespeare’s life, and it emphasizes how his plays were popular and written for everyone. Through some close reading, discussion, and a variety of language games, students have become more comfortable with Shakespeare’s language and performing. The culmination of the unit was to act out one of the scenes in the play.
The classes at our outdoor site were rich in learning and creativity today! Today’s menu was water testing, hydrology, macro invertebrates, and linoleum block printing. Through all the water studies our students engaged in, we learned a lot in regard to our question, “is Chehalem Creek a suitable release site for chinook salmon eggs, and would it support spawning chinook salmon.”
A huge thanks to Joel and Roxy Thomas for their amazing work in organizing such a great experience. Our instructors Clair, Dave, Froggy, and Pete were amazing, as well as the several Newberg High School Volunteers! Lastly, thank you parent chaperones for your help with classes and with our students in making smooth transitions throughout each day.
Aside from a few rain squalls, the weather cooperated for the most part. Our students engaged in some great learning about salmon anatomy, salmon survival, rotten log food webs, and riparian zones. Four new great learning stations tomorrow!
Plan to bring your family to school in costume this Saturday, October 28th, from 4-7 pm for carnival games, fun and loads of prizes!
All proceeds from this event will go toward sending 4th and 5th graders to outdoor school.
Bring a spouse, grandparent, friend or older student to enjoy the fun and even run a game for an hour! There are more teachers planning to come and help than parents, so let’s change that equation!
Call or email Sheri and let her know you can help us make this happen!

Our EY 24 Math Competition Team was small but mighty! This year 3rd graders were invited to participate. Their rounds were for fun rather than competition. Vincent was our lone 3rd grade representative but he is now recruiting friends for next year! Representing 4th grade were Jack, Michael, and Vada, while our 5th graders were Norris, Tanner, Trevor, and Ty. All 7 of our 4th and 5th graders qualified for the quarterfinal rounds for their respective grade levels and ultimately Trevor captured 3rd place and Ty was the champion. Congratulations to all 8 of our “mathletes” and thank you for representing Ewing Young with solid math skills and great sportsmanship!
Once again, our 5th grade students represented EY well with excellent behavior, sportsmanship, and teamwork at the Newberg 5th Grade Track Meet. Our students also gave their best effort on the field and the track, and there were many ribbons earned. Great job, 5th graders. Click on the link below to view several photos of the event!
